A FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF AN ICON
The TD 1600 is based on the historic sub-chassis architecture from Thorens GmbH, but in this version the design has been further refined. The sub-chassis rests on three conical springs mounted in the bottom of the cabinet and is stabilized by a tightly tensioned steel wire, which prevents lateral movement and ensures controlled vertical oscillation.
The result is mechanical calm that effectively isolates the tonearm and platter from the motor and external vibrations.
EXTERNAL LINEAR POWER SUPPLY
The included TPN 1600 power supply uses a powerful toroidal transformer and delivers symmetrical voltage to the electronically controlled synchronous motor. This solution ensures high stability and optimal synchronization of the rotation.
At the same time, the external power supply reduces electromagnetic influence inside the turntable itself and contributes to a cleaner signal environment.
TP 160 TONEARM WITH KNIFE-EDGE BEARING
At the heart of this version is the newly developed TP 160 tonearm, designed by Helmut Thiele. The arm has a 9” J-shaped design and is inspired by classic studio tonearms, but executed with modern precision and material choices.
The ultra-precise knife-edge bearing ensures minimal friction and extreme stability in vertical movement. Horizontal movement is supported by magnetic stabilization, contributing to exceptionally calm and precise tracking.
The arm is equipped with an SME-standard headshell connection, providing full flexibility in the choice of cartridge.
TRUE BALANCED SIGNAL PATH
As a key differentiator, the TD 1600 with TP 160 offers balanced XLR outputs in addition to traditional RCA outputs. Combined with a Moving Coil cartridge, this enables a true balanced signal path from turntable to phono preamplifier.
Because the phono signal is extremely sensitive to electrical interference, balanced operation can significantly reduce noise and improve signal integrity in ambitious systems.
MECHANICAL PRECISION AND SONIC AUTHORITY
The two-part aluminum platter with internal, ground precision belt provides stable and consistent power transmission. The combination of mass, decoupling, and a controlled drive system creates a foundation with high stability and minimal mechanical influence.
When the turntable is configured with a suitable cartridge, the sound is characterized by depth, structure, and authority. The sub-chassis architecture creates a dark and quiet backdrop against which the music’s nuances and spatial information emerge with natural clarity.
A PLATFORM FOR SERIOUS SYSTEMS
The TD 1600 with TP 160 is not intended as a plug-and-play solution. It is a platform. A foundation for the serious vinyl system, where the choice of cartridge, cables, and phono amplifier is an integral part of the experience.
Here, classic Thorens DNA meets modern engineering in a design created for those who want maximum control, maximum precision, and a long-term investment in analog playback.
