The RIAA amplifier – the way to better sound
To be able to play a record at all and get the music out through the speakers, you need a preamplifier that, in this context, is called a RIAA amplifier. The RIAA amplifier has two important functions: it amplifies the very weak signal coming from the turntable’s cartridge, and it corrects the frequency curve to recreate the original sound from the record’s recording.
When a record is cut, it is necessary to lower the bass and raise the treble, as this helps prevent the cartridge from jumping out of the groove and reduces noise and hiss in the recording. Unfortunately, this also means that the sound curve must be restored before it can be played back with optimal sound quality. This is where the RIAA amplifier comes into the picture - by correcting the frequency curve and amplifying the signal, you can get the balanced and natural sound that the turntable is known for.
MM RIAA or MC RIAA
Many amplifiers have a built-in RIAA, and this type of input is typically called “phono”. If your amplifier does not have a built-in RIAA, it can be purchased separately and connected to a regular line input on the amplifier, such as CD, AUX, TUNER.
A very good MM RIAA can be purchased for around DKK 1,000, whereas an MC RIAA costs considerably more and works in the same way, except for its even more powerful amplification. This is because an MC cartridge typically has a much weaker output signal to send into the RIAA section, and therefore the signal requires stronger amplification.
