The Uni-Q driver – the core of LS50 Meta’s sound

It has been almost a decade since KEF launched the original LS50, so the big question is whether LS50 Meta has been worth the wait. We have no doubt – it absolutely has! But you need to hear it for yourself, because with LS50 Meta, KEF has now introduced its 12th generation Uni-Q driver, and that provides a noticeably larger soundstage, better imaging, and a wonderfully natural and detailed sound. In addition, LS50 Meta delivers a clearer and cleaner sound in the upper midrange and lower treble, so you can enjoy much more from the voices of your favorite artists.

LS50 Meta’s distinctive sound is only possible because KEF places the tweeter at the acoustic center of the midrange/bass driver, so all the sound comes from a single point. This means that the mid and high frequencies are dispersed much more evenly and widely than with conventional speakers, where the sound comes from drivers in different positions. When the sound comes from a single point, it also has the advantage of avoiding interference problems, resulting in a much cleaner and more natural sound. Another advantage is that all frequencies reach the ear at the same time, which makes the sound feel far more precise and realistic.

MAT – A revolutionary acoustic technology

Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) is a synthetic material that KEF has developed to absorb the unwanted sound created by the driver or the cabinet. They have achieved this by creating a complex labyrinth-like structure, where the patterns are designed to absorb different frequency ranges, creating an acoustic black hole from which the sound from the rear of the driver and the cabinet cannot escape. It eliminates as much as 99 percent of the unwanted sound, so you hear only the desired sound emitted from the front of the speaker driver. The result is a cleaner and more natural sound that is completely free of distortion.

Designed for great sound

LS50 Meta’s acoustic improvements are also reflected in KEF’s design choices. Here, they have equipped LS50 Meta with a low-diffraction baffle, while the cabinet is cross-braced, injection-molded, and damped to eliminate internal vibrations. The effect of this is that LS50 Meta has the very lowest coloration of any speaker in its class!

Another feature of LS50 Meta’s design is the patented offset bass reflex port, which is designed to delay turbulence and prevent resonances from affecting the midrange. This improves clarity and leads to a much more detailed and immersive sound.
