Børresen X3 - A revolution in quality, performance, and price

Børresen has developed a new entry-level speaker at a price that is accessible to even more people. The Børresen X3 speaker is designed on the solid foundation of Børresen Acoustics’ development traditions, design philosophy, and technological know-how.

Technologies and components

The speakers in the Børresen X series are not just a new entry into the Børresen universe, but also represent a true revolution in quality and performance in their price class. These speakers are created on the basis of all the knowledge gathered during the development of the M, 0, and Z series. You will find components from these exclusive series in the Børresen X series – for example, the brand-new spread-tow carbon fiber diaphragm, the highly acclaimed Børresen ribbon tweeter, and the use of copper rings in the magnetic motor system.

X series diaphragm – Bass/midrange

This diaphragm is designed to achieve maximum stiffness with minimal noise. The technological requirements for this outstanding high-end diaphragm performance made it necessary to design, develop, and assemble all components in-house.

The X3 diaphragm consists of three layers laminated into one unified unit: two layers of spread carbon fiber with a layer of aramid honeycomb spacer material in between.

The combination of these materials gives the diaphragm its unique properties. The spread-tow carbon fiber is designed to create a surface with optimal stiffness. This unique property reduces sound-disturbing vibrations and resonances to an unprecedented level. At the same time, aramid honeycomb has the best possible stiffness-to-weight ratio in the vertical direction. A diaphragm with a flat resonance response paved the way for developing a highly transparent speaker with a reduced magnetic motor system to optimize costs.

X series magnet system – Bass/midrange

In the X3’s magnetic motor system, double copper rings are used on the pole rings to achieve high flux and low inductance. The use of copper rings is borrowed from the Børresen Z series. Copper reacts to changes in flux – the better the counteraction from the copper rings, the flatter the inductance curve and the lower the electromagnetic resonance. In addition, lower inductance also means fewer peaks in the impedance curve. Both result in a lower load on the amplifier.

To ensure high efficiency, the X3 has two pole rings. This causes a certain loss of flux, which reduces efficiency, but this is compensated for by using a larger magnet.

X series Børresen tweeter

The tweeter in the Børresen X3 has the same basic design as in the other Børresen series. However, the magnet and iron mass have been reduced. This is possible thanks to the extremely high efficiency of the original tweeter design. Efficiency has therefore dropped only slightly from an exceptional 94 dB to 88 dB – which is still impressive efficiency for a tweeter.

The tweeter operates from approximately 2.5 kHz and up. The moving mass is extremely low – only 0.01 gram. The fully enclosed tweeter can operate at impressive speed. Its high robustness enables it to handle very powerful transients without causing unpleasant dips in the sound level.

X series crossover

The Børresen X3 is equipped with a parallel crossover built with the same high-quality components as in the Z series. This provides a very mechanically stable crossover that minimizes self-resonance.

X series cabinet

The cabinet surface is finished in black or white piano lacquer and reinforced with optical carbon fiber inserts. The cabinet is made from a heavily braced wood composite material with the property of eliminating sound distortion. The material also reduces mechanical influences, especially hysteresis. The sonic effect is clearly audible.

The Børresen X3 cabinet has six bass reflex ports. The tweeter is vented to compensate for the air pressure that builds up. The bass range consists of tuned ports, calibrated to musically relevant frequencies.
